3D digitization in the naval sector

We recently carried out a new type of project in the naval sector, an industry that is increasingly making use of new technologies, such as mass data capture, to solve problems quickly, efficiently and effectively.

On this occasion, we travelled to Astillero (Cantabria), to the facilities of ASTANDER, a leading company in ship repair, conversion and modernization with more than 100 years of experience in the sector, which has established itself as one of the world’s leading shipyards.

The objective of this project was to carry out the 3D digitization of a ship’s bulbous bow and obtain as much information as possible, both from the exterior and interior. Before capturing the data on site, a study was conducted to determine the best way to approach the project, taking into account the challenges of working in confined spaces and always selecting the technology and methodology that best suited the specific needs of the client.

To obtain a single point cloud containing the complete bulbous bow, a total of 105 positions were captured using a terrestrial laser scanner, with reference targets used to assist in registering the scans. The resulting point cloud will provide the geometry of the bulbous bow in its current state.

A fundamental pillar throughout all phases of a project, and a key factor in ensuring its success, is effective communication between all parties and a clear understanding of the objective to be achieved.
